James Lionel Frederick Gladstone
My Canadian historical figure is James Lionel Frederick Gladstone a champion cowboy [ AKA Gladstone Jim ]. He was born in 1942 and he sadly passed away in May, 16, 2016. After many years of battling chronic disease he peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by many family members. Jim was born in 1942 to Fred Edith Gladstone in Cardston Alberta. He was the Canadian calf roping champion in 1948 and 1950 and was also given the pioneer of rodeo award by the Calgary Stampede he also won the cow milking champion in 1948. Jim had three siblings June, [Jennifer] Caen and Jeff [known as the four "j's". He married in his 20's and often brought his growing family on the road with him during his rise in rodeo rankings. Jim's hard work paid off when he won the NFR world calf roping title. He became the first cowboy from the north of the Canadian border to take on the world title in any of the timed events and the eighth Canadian to latch on to a global championship.
