Donovan Bailey

Donovan Bailey
Donovan Bailey was born on the notorious day of December 16 1967 not very notorious to some people but it was the birth to one of Canada’s most iconic figures in sports when he set the 100m world record in Atlanta in 1996 with a time of 9.84 seconds(wow I know right, fast) making him the world's fastest man. Donovan was a teenager (13 years old) when he immigrated to Canada in 1981. Donovan played basketball before his graduation at Queen Elizabeth Park High School in Oakville Ontario and Was a gifted athlete but was unable to devote his full energy to sprinting. His real interest was in clothing and he established a successful clothing business before he began running track in earnest in 1990. He was however good enough to make the national sprint team and was an alternate on the 1993 sprint squad.

Donovan moved to Louisiana to train seriously. His times improved dramatically and in 1995 he staged several upset victories and posted a world best time for the season. At the Canadian championships that year he ran a blazing 9.91 seconds in the 100m final and established himself as a favourite for the world championships. Bailey dominated the 100m final at the world championships in Goteborg, Sweden running a 9.97 and claiming the gold medal.

All these accomplishments lead to Donovan’s successes and landed him a place in the sports Hall of fame {where I will be one day} and this is my blog on a star the man is Donovan Bailey!!!!Image result for donovan bailey

Annie May Jackson

thumb200s.jpg (200×200)
My Canadian historical figure is Annie May Jackson, the first female police officer in Canada. It all began as a child, she was born in January, 1879 to parents Jonathan and Letitia Jackson in Ontario. She was the oldest of three girls. Her sisters were Isabella Jackson and Margaret Jane Jackson. She was an average girl doing things other girls did but when she hit the age of 25, that all changed. She wanted to be something that no other women had been. She soon wanted to become the first female police officer in Canada. On October 1st, 1912, she was made a constable to the Edmonton Police station winning out over 47 other applicants. Her picture as a police women appeared on the front page on the London daily Mirror on August 8, 1913.  Annie Jackson’s job was to help women uphold “high morals and manners”.  She was assigned this job because the station thought that if people didn’t like what they were doing it would be better for a woman to be sued. Becoming an officer was both daring and controversial at the time. She had a monthly salary of $75. At work each day she would wear an ankle long skirt and a prim hat. While also being a police officer, she was a trusted member of the McDougall United Church. When she was a police officer she was well known for her kind and compassionate manner. She soon married William Kelcher and was forced to quit her job after giving birth to her only son, Henry Kelcher who became a trustee of the McDougall United Church. Sadly, Annie Jackson passed away at the age of 82 in January, 1959 after being hit by a car walking to her home at night. In her honour, Jackson heights, Annie May Jackson  park and a school were named in her honour to preserve her legacy and amazing life. Annie May Jackson has inspired many women and today there are thousands of female police officers in Canada. She made a great difference in the world which will always be remembered.

Emily Murphy was born in Cookstown Ontario on March 14 1868 and had two older brothers named Tomas and Gowan. Her mother was named Emily Ferguson, and her father was Issac Ferguson, her mother stayed at home and did chores and cooking while her father was a property owner and was very wealthy. They say that her father influenced his children to treat each other with equality. Emily attended a private school for girls in Toronto, this is were she met her friend and future husband Aurther Murphy. After Aurther married Emily they had four daughters  Madelyn, Evelyn, Doris, Cathleen. But Sadly Doris died diphtheria at a very young age resulting in the family first moving to Swan River Manitoba, then to Alberta Edmonton. In Edmonton Murphy wrote her first book "The Black Candle." Although she thought the book to be a success, many people began criticizing the way she described the use of  Drugs and liqueur. People also criticized the way she talked about other races in her book, mostly Chinese people saying that the were the ones to get Canadians hooked on drugs. Some people even stood up and said the book should be stripped from the shelves. but this never happened. Even if her book was a failure soon enough Murphy started working on the persons case in both Canada and the in the British Empire. With other woman now named the famous five they won the case and woman were now declared persons in Canada and in the British Empire. But sadly on October 17 1933 Emily Murphy passed away. No one knows exactly how she died but the guess is either old age or a sickness as Murphy was 65 years old. Even if her book was a failure she had women declared persons in Canada and in the British empire and her legacy was born.
